About 'Chasing Mavericks'
Chasing Mavericks is the inspirational true story of real life surfing legend Jay Moriarty. The film begins when Jay is about 8 years old, and his neighbour Frosty Hesson saves him from drowning. Laterly, 15 year old Jay discovers that the mythical 'Mavericks' surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, is not only real, but exists just miles from his Santa Cruz home, he enlists the reluctant help of the local legend Frosty Hesson to train him to survive it.
As Jay and Frosty embark on their quest to accomplish the impossible, Frosty sets Jay a number of tasks to accomplish to attain what he refers to as the 'foundation pillars of surfing'. They form a unique friendship encouraged by Frosty's wife Brenda which transforms both their lives, and their quest to tame Mavericks becomes about far more than just surfing.
There are an interesting series of side plots of Jay's relationships with both Frosty and his family, his mother, played by Elizabeth Shue and his girlfriend Kim.
Chasing Mavericks was made with the help of some of the biggest names in the surfing world, and features some of the best live action big wave surfing footage ever captured on film.
The film was released in 2012 and was directed jointly by Curtis Hanson & Michael Apted. It was filmed on location at 'Mavericks' in California.
